Understanding tabs

Most people nowadays prefer to look at tabs to learn how to play a song or scale on guitar and bass alike. While Sheet music contains alot more information it takes alot of time to learn how to read and interpret them. Now most bass players start with a four string bass guitar. Standard tuning for the bass and bottom four strings is the same E-A-D-G. Now tabs are also usually upside down top is bottom and vise versa. now here is an example of the C major scale for bass guitar.

E-------------------------

A--3---5-----------------

D-----------2-3-5-------

G------------------2-4-5

Breaking down the C major scale

To Play the C Scale you want to your middle finger ont he 3rd fret down from the headstock on the A string then simply strike the same string your finger is on with a finger on your other hand over the pick up. After the note sounds place your pinky on the 5th fret same string and strike the string again. From there you should move down to the D string and strike the string with your index finger on the 2nd fret. Then like before you go to the 3rd fret and strike and then the 5th using the same fingers asyou did on the A string middle and pinky. Now move down to what refered to top string or G string. Now like Isaid before up is down so theG string is on the bottom of the bass neck. On this string thepattern changes alittle bit start with the @nd fret index finger and strike then using your ring fingeron the 4th string strike it again and finish the scale off with whats called the octave 5th fret using your pinky.

Understanding what you are playing

Notes for any type of music range from A to G. The C scale goes from C to The C octave same note higher pitch.

A---C--D

D---------E--F---G

G--------------------A--B---C

The above tab is the same tab as the one posted earlier the only difference is I used the letters of the notes rather than the numbered fret. Your fret markers will help you find the frets faster once you become familiar with you fret board. Click the link below to see a video of the scale in action.

Y is this scale important

this scale pattern which is all the notes whithin the scale can be played all over the bass which will familiarize new players to all the notes on the fretboard . For example you can start on the 5th fret of the A string instead of the 3rd fret. When starting on the 5thb fret and playing the same pattern your are now playing a D major scale.

E----------------------------

A-5--7----------------------

D------4-5--7--------------

G---------------4-5--7-----
